The Guide
Eric Paulson has been a fishing guide and outfitter in Montana for over thirty years — one of the most technically proficient fly-fishing guides working in the state today. Growing up in an outdoor-oriented family, Eric spent his formative years fishing and hunting waters ranging from the Pacific Coast to western Montana.
In 1989, Eric moved to Bozeman to pursue a football career at Montana State University, but quickly found his true passion in the rivers surrounding him. His guide experience spans the vast majority of streams and rivers in the infamous 300-mile circle of Southwest Montana, as well as steelhead guiding in Idaho and on Washington's Olympic Peninsula, and international trips to Christmas Island, New Zealand, and Quebec.
Eric's skill set covers everything from a Spring Creek 3-weight dry fly rod to a 17' #10/11 two-handed spey rod for steelhead. Whether you're a beginner or a seasoned angler, he meets you where you are and puts you on fish.
Eric's photography has appeared in publications including Fly Fisherman Magazine and the Yellowstone Angler. He has collaborated with National Geographic Television and is a fly designer for Umpqua Feather Merchants — creator of the Flutter Bug, Tick, and Hot Head Ray patterns.
✶ Eric guides around the state depending on the time of year, hatches, and where the fishing is best. Currently based in Ennis, MT — home water on the Madison River and the Bighorn River in spring.
